04/23/07 - Lil Wayne- Drought III full review

Lil’ Wayne is a very interesting character, the very tight-lipped MC has been making waves in the Hip-Hop world a lot in 06 and now 07. The album “The Carter III” is one of the most anticipated in Hip-Hop this year, and he has foes popping up left and right. Yet the biggest thing with Lil Wayne is the claims that he has been skating bye lately on the mike. Not showing off the skills that made him not only a “contender” for the title of King Of The South, but one of the elite rappers of today.

I mean Weezy has shown flashes of brilliance every now and then lately (i.e. the freestyle on “Show Me What You Got”), but for a majority of countless features Weezy’s been sort of slacking. Well with the third installment of “The Drought”, Weezy F. Baby shows the gift but also offers the curse of being a skilled rapper. Taking on a army worth of today’s hottest instrumentals Wayne goes out and does what he does best...confuse the fans.

Over the Rich Boy hit “Throw Some D’s” Wayne creates his own version entitled “Throw Some Keys” where he perfectly flows over the instrumental. The thing is as seen on several other “freestyles” the song goes on for a little to long, because as he starts off well it just ends up being stagnant and plain. It’s as though he just takes the fans for granted and rumbles off whatever on songs like “King Kong”, and “Upgrade you”. Yet credit must be given as Weezy rides the beat to perfection on the latter saying “I am the boy, no decoy/ and I will destroy/ any boy or man/ and I prefer, money than bitches”.

You can tell when Wanye is focused and actually might of thought out the rhymes or fell into a zone at times while rocking this mixtape. Ardor is delivered on “ We Taking Over (My Daddy)”. As Weezy exclaims form the start “It’s me, the Rappe...r eater!”, he addresses the topic that’s been circulating about him and Baby kissing rhyming “damn right I kiss my daddy/ I think they pissed at how rich my daddy is/ and I ‘m his kid I stunt with my daddy/ call Mrs. Lee, she with my daddy/ so diss me, don't diss my daddy/ cause who ways there when no one was/ just my daddy”. It’s no mystery that Weezy has become close with Dipset, due in part with him and Julez Santana collaborating. Wayne seems to take things a step further on “Dipset”, where it sounds as though he has official join the Dipset click “I’m so Dipset, Dip South baby/ if you don’t like it ni**a fuck you with an AK/ ...if Killa said a ni**a dead then a ni**a dead/ if Baby said a ni**a dead then a ni**a dead/ V.I.P we be them ni**as banging in the red/ don’t drink cristal no more, just pour it on white bitches heads”. Once again showing love to the crew on Part II, both tracks show Weezy at his best. Maybe not some much lyrically but in terms of swagger and flow.

Say what you want about Weezy, but when he’s focused he is one of the best out without a doubt. On the soulful “Forever”, Wayne zones out saying “I ignite and take off/ catch up/ I’m the best doing it, fess up/ Ni**a feel different he can chest up/ and guess what/ I bring it to his chest, to his right lung and left lung/ get a check up, ni**a put your check up/ I swear I’m on fire/ need water like a hiccup/ so I guess I can might as well can say/ that I’m the best today”. Weezy is notorious for having weird off the wall punch lines and yes this mixtape is filled with it. There is even a wierd song or to like when Wayne plays Ceelo on “Krazy” or the ode to Ciara on “Promise”. Yet that’s not all it’s filled with. Wayne drops unadulterated fire to get the masses paying attention to the MC and not the man as he slaughters some old school joints like “Dead Presidents” and “If I Ruled The World”. Wayne can be a confusing guy and at times, there is no doubt about that. Offering half ass freestyles here and there, but then making up for it with hot tracks. The Drought is dope either way you slice it. Haters are going to hate and fans are going to love it. It just is what it is.
