While each major label has their star and supporting cast in the South, Interscope relied on Young Buck for their presence below the Mason-Dixon. Seemingly overnight, a newly developed artist from Mobile, Alabama named Rich Boy appeared on the release date previews. Before anybody could inquire, "Throw Some D's" hit radio and became winter '07s smash hit. With Rich Boy (Zone4/Interscope), the self title debut certainly goes beyond filler, but also lyrically appears to serve as an example of microwave music.

"Touch That Ass" is case and point. With whispered dumbed-down lyrics about fellatio, and a remedial chorus, the dynamic beat is the only saving grace. "Ghetto Rich" shows Rich Boy in another light though. John Legend's carefully controlled vocals help dramatize this vivid depiction of the trap. The album spreads into these two schools. The tones and concepts vary, but there may be a reason Kanye West scored a touchdown covering Rich Boy's first down single.

Doing a bulk of the production, Polow, formerly of Jim Crow, gave Rich Boy a unique sound. After The Runners put screw choruses on Front Street in 2006, Polow brings the emotion back into the music. "Let's Get This Paper" is a eloquently produced ballad incorporating chamber singing, supreme drum programming, and great lyrical timing from the rapper. The other personnel, which includes Lil Jon and Aqua don't stand out nearly as well. In fact, Brian Kidd's "Get to Poppin'" not only mimics Truth Hurth's "Addictive" a bit too closely, it relies on a four second loop like it's 1989.

Rather than give Rich Boy more credit than he's due, it's safe to say that this album belongs equally, if not more to Polow Da Don. Like Nitti backing Yung Joc last year, this effort is less about who's saying the rhymes and more about who provided the addictive beats and catchy choruses. The major label debut walks the delicate line between disposable art and the official entrance music to Alabama's Hip-Hop delegate.
