03/07/07 - Consequence - Don’t Quit Your Day Job

Queens, New York can be consider a breeding ground for some of Hip-Hop’s most iconic MC’s. It’s home to the likes of Nas, Mobb Deep, 50 Cent and so many more, yet there’s one Queens resident that is considered one of the Illest to ever touch the mike as well as one of the most unappreciated. Well for Dexter Raymond Mills, Jr. better known as Consequence that stops today.

It has been a long difficult journey for the MC, one that hit as many highs as it did lows. The cousin of the legendary Q-Tip, Con made his claim to fame as being the unofficial member of "A Tribe Called Quest". Unfortunately when the music stopped and The Quest went their separate ways Consequence fell through the cracks. Things looked bleek, dare I say it was a wrap on rap for Con...that is until The Louis Vuitton Don step into the picture. Almost ending up with a deal through Roc-Fella (until Kanye and Dame Dash started to not see eye to eye), Con signed to Kanye’s label G.O.O.D Music and is set to release his long awaited solo album “Don’t Quit Your Day Job”.

It’s kind of funny that the format or should I say concept of this album feels like something Kanye would come out with. The reason being is the fact that Consequence is the man that basically birthed Kanye’s rhyme style. It’s evident on songs like the first single “Callin’ Me”. Where over the infectious old school vibe the drums kicks Con spits “Check 1, check 2, check 3/ that’s about how many checks that they had from me/ so I made shorty shake her ass for me/ now she wonder why I be takin’ half her fee/ and she lookin’ like ‘is this how it has to be’/ so I guess I replied with the Mack in me/ told her unless she wanna see a catastrophe, you better get up on that pole where that cash will be”.
Consequence does a little something for the ladies on “Pretty Little Sexy Momma” but gives the Hip-Hop heads dope lyrics with a fresh flow “I make a damsel in distress dismantle her dress/ so once you get me pass the guards I can handle the rest/ got a plan for these stress, in these evil times/ so I keep ‘em bodied armored like it‘s mid-evil times“. It’s funny cause I as you listen to this you can’t help but be a little reminded of Lupe’s “Sunshine”. Fan’s of the MC finally get a CD Quality version of the Kanye West assisted “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”. Probably one of Kanye’s best instrumentals Con shines brighter than the sun as he murders and devours the track rhyming “so now the games ugly and my chains ugly/ things became ugly, cause my ugly worry got a stain and it’s ugly/ waking up looking crusty/ and Mrs. Thing whose Ugly is sayin’ to me don’t touch me/ I went from Pretty Willie, to pretty Philly, to pretty gully, so you know things will still get pretty ugly/ and this is for the hood, the crabs, the junkies/ the good, the bad, the ugly/”.

Con goes back and describes the struggle of wanting to leave the working world to chase his dreams but feeling trap to bill collectors on “Job Song” professing “...matter fact they askin’ Dexter when I plan to pay back/ on that long line of credit that they lent me way back, way back/ at the turn of the century/ the notice they sent to me, is sayin’ essentially/ If I don’t pay that balance off along with that extra fee/ penitentiary and criminal charges/ and probably soon to follow if you did this regardless/ and that got me noshes/ and feelin’ precautious/ cause the fruits of my labor ain’t barin’ no harvest/ at least as a artist/ and the lease is the oddest/” This album set’s the tone for great Hip-Hop for 2007. Consequence presents the world his passion and frustrations with just trying to make his dreams come true. On this odyssey he provides the listeners with that G.O.O.D music with songs like “Feeling This Way” featuring John Legend where he wrote every lyric to save budget cost or the epic “Grammy Family”. Grammys may not be far away for Consequence but right now he’s just concentrated on this do or die situation of getting his just deserved respect. I suggest definitely adding this to your Hip-Hop collection, it’s the only time where it’s good to pay the consequences.
