Default Dj Clue - Clue Vinci Code

Dj Clue - Clue Vinci Code

In the rap game, there are rookies, vets, and icons. Icons are the individuals who revolutionized an aspect or aspects of the game ultimately having a heavy influence on all who come after them. DJ Clue did this. He is undoubtedly the reason why a DJ can get a major record deal, become a video jockey on a major network, and scream his or her name over records making his seal of approval important to the streets. DJs like Clue and a few others can make or break a career. That’s major. And one of the modern mixtape forefathers, Clue, is back with another installation in his never-ending mixtape series with his new Clue Vinci Code.

With any Clue project, you can expect the biggest names, the best material out and even some musical crack that hasn’t hit the streets yet. Clue Vinci continues the tradition with the presently blazing heat rock by Rick Ross, the “Hustlin’ (Remix),” featuring Young Jeezy and president Carter aka Jay-Z. Newcomer to the game, Rick Ross, does his thing with his stanza but cannot keep pace with heavy hitters, Jeezy and Jay, especially Jay who spits a verse addressing “nigga’s corny raps” and announcing his return to the throne. Jay’s verse fires off some warning shots to the Diplomat’s general, Cam that will assuredly keep the streets buzzin’. Busta Rhymes and Nas check in with “Rough Around the Edges,” a track on Busta’s upcoming LP, The Big Bang. Bus uses this track as a confessional listing the dirt he’s done through the years while Nas explores the constant spiritual struggle between good and evil over the voices of the choir that ring out over the track. Late in the tape, the listener’s will find a jewel by unlikely collaborators, Pharrell and Kanye West on “Number One.” This ode to sexy fuses the sly crooning of Skateboard P and the deft, jocose rhymes of the Louis Vuitton Don while serenading their lady of choice. I expected more from the combo; maybe something more progressive/futuristic, but the track still delivers. Clue snatches you from the seductive nightlife and brings you back to the grime when Swizz laces the track and Jada thugs through the beat on “Thug It Out” delivering something the streets can ride to. Not new to the mixtape scene, Jada delivers sturdy bars and you already know your man Swizzy puts it down on the beat.

Although it seems like the Clue Vinci Code is a run through the gamut of rap stars and the game’s hottest tracks, there are some lagging points. There are plenty of filler tracks on the mixtape including some of the appearances by a few unknowns. Ransom’s “What Ya Hood Like” featuring Fabolous has Ransom spitting a monotonous verse leaving a heavy burden for Fab to carry. Fortunately, Fab delivers a verse laden with enough double entendres and metaphors to hit the rewind button. Then there’s Ray J’s “Smokin Smokin Weed (Remix)” featuring Snoop Dogg. First, when did Brandy’s lil’ brother start blowing sticky? Even Snoop can’t save this one. Just skip it. The exclusive tracks and star power supersede the weak material on the album. With the likes of Jay, Nas, Kanye, Jada, Styles P, Game, Joe Budden, Lloyd Banks and a number of others Clue succeeds giving you enough heat to keep your head noddin’ through the summer.
