Ice Cube is living history. Cube has been rocking for damn near 20 years. That’s some monumental shit. Ice Cube came on the scene with fellow N.W.A. members and completely changed the game up. Cube and a few others started gangsta rap and that movement still continues on today. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy E were pioneers in the West and had youngsters all over the world grabbing their crotch and throwing their middle fingers up at the cops. Ice Cube embodies the West Coast. Now, the West Coast O.G. is back with another LP, Laugh Now, Cry Later
On this LP, Cube hits you with a diverse blend of sounds. Ice Cube creates a nice contrast mixing that laid back, smooth Cali gangsta ish with that upbeat, fight-inducing, southern bounce when he collaborates with the King of Crunk, Lil Jon, on “Go To Church” featuring Snoop Dogg. On this track, Cube spits over the bass heavy Lil Jon beat about them fake, scary emcees. Snoop on the other hand seems awkward over the Southern beat but for the most part, this track gets play in the whip because of the hump it’s gonna give the subwoofers. The crunk Lil Jon makes another production appearance on “Holla @ Cha Boy.” This track doesn’t go over as well as “Go To Church.” Cube spends most of the track bragging about his appeal to females throwing in some low key sexual references from time to time; nothing special here. Cube does give that straight West Coast G-Funk on “Spittin Pollaseeds” featuring W.C and Kokane. This smooth track sounds like what you’d drink your gin and juice to. Cube addresses critics on West Coast emcees saying, “Imma spit it how I feel it/Fuck a gimmick/you can keep your catchy lines/I’m bout to write a rhyme/if you got a backpack/tryin’ to act black/think you know the culture/you a fuckin’ vulture…this West Coast flow is different from the East/but it ain’t no different in the streets. Cube even briefly makes a stop on the East Coast using a familiar Biggie track (Player’s Antem) sample to reminisce about his matriculation through the game. Ice Cube’s age shows in a number of ways on this album. He puts forth wisdom On “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” a parody that delves into the disturbing “get it now” mentality of blacks. Cube, a master narrator, lists various situations where blacks ignore the future consequences of a situation, so they can reap the immediate benefits. Scenarios like a mother using their infant’s credit or an adult using their mom’s credit to finance something they don’t have the money for subsequently destroying their child or parent’s credit illustrate a few examples of what Cube means in the song’s title “Laugh Now Cry Later.” On “Child Support” Cube sons young emcees playing the role of father with the chorus smacking rookies in the face exclaiming “Ain’t no other kings in this rap thing/they sib-lings/nothing but my chi’ren/one shot they disappearin’.” Cube snatches his respect here. The other way that Cube shows his age on Laugh Now, Cry Later is his outdated flow on most tracks. On most tracks he seems like he is still using the same flow he had back in them N.W.A days. Maybe it’s time for this O.G. to wrap it up and retire. What made N.W.A. so popular was that their music was relevant. It’s hard for me to imagine cats bumping this Cube and relating to it. There are some dope tracks on here, but not enough for me to recommend it to everyone. The bottom line is old school fans will like it. New schoolers won’t |

the album was dope for 2 facts:
1) it's some authentic westcoast music. he spits on issues in the west and has the same old flow from NWA, which some people actually enjoy. 2) its with an old school concept. But if ur a fan of Cube, you should enjoy this album. I personally was impressed, and it's more lyrically refreshing from today's mainstream westcoast artists.
